A rare and authentic invitation into the real working day of Lapland’s herders

Experience something truly exceptional and gain a rare glimpse beneath the surface of Northern life. Reindeer round-up is a vital part of Lapland's living heritage that very few outsiders ever get to see. This gathering site is closed to the general public—even local residents cannot visit without special permission. In close collaboration with local herders, we are honored to invite our guests inside this timeless Arctic tradition.

During the day, you will follow the real working routine of the herders. Our visit moves entirely at the rhythm of the work and nature, attending as respectful guests in their daily working environment.

Availability: September - October

Duration: 6-8 hours

Start time: 9:00 AM

Price: ?

Your journey begins with a pickup in Rovaniemi followed by a scenic drive to the remote round-up grounds. Before entering the site, your guide and a local herder will brief you on the day's events and explain how to move around safely and respectfully.

You will learn about traditional earmarks—distinctive patterns cut into the reindeer's ears that allow families to identify ownership. You will observe and photograph the action around the enclosure as herders carefully separate their animals from the larger herd. One of the most captivating parts of the day is seeing the seamless teamwork: everyone knows their exact role, and generations of experience show in every movement.

After witnessing the action, you can purchase homemade soup (such as traditional dried meat soup or salmon soup) along with freshly baked pastries and coffee prepared by local families. Sitting around the crackling fire, hearing personal stories about reindeer husbandry and Arctic life offers a profound connection to the local way of living.
